In a win for students at Holmes Community College and across the nation, the Federal Pell Grant has now returned to year-round status and is available to cover summer school. Students may be eligible to use part of their Federal Pell Grant eligibility for the 2017-2018 academic year to cover expenses for the current summer term as long as they are enrolled in a minimum of six credit hours or half time over the course of the summer. In addition, beginning July 1, the maximum Pell Grant amount has increased by $105 to $5,920 for the 2017/2018 academic year.
Established in 1972, the Pell Grant is a federal program which makes funds available to eligible undergraduate students attending an approved post-secondary institution. Application is made through the FAFSA (https://fafsa.ed.gov/). The Pell Grant does not have to be repaid and is intended for students who are enrolled in a degree or certificate-seeking program. The amount of the award is based on financial need, enrollment status and the cost of attendance.
This is the first time the Pell Grant has been available year-round since June of 2011. The newly-reinstated program gives institutions more flexibility in how the funds are used than its predecessor.
"Anytime we are able to help students have the needed money to attend college it is great thing," said Financial Aid Director Dr. Gail Muse Beggs. "An additional Pell grant award for the summer will help students pay for classes and books without taking on additional student loan debt, which is usually the only funding option available for summer school. We are very excited about this opportunity for our students."
The reinstatement of the "summer Pell" is sure to be beneficial as more and more students choose to take summer school in order to graduate and get a job more quickly.
