Holmes Community College sophomore Taylor Vance, son of Jeff and Leigh Vance of Grenada, recently received the prestigious Lyceum Scholarship from the University of Mississippi. The scholarship provides full resident tuition for two years. Vance graduated from Holmes on May 12 and will begin his studies at Ole Miss as a journalism major in the fall of 2017.
"Receiving this award is a great honor and privilege; however, this isn't an honor and scholarship just for myself," Vance said. "This is an honor for anyone who has ever taken the time to invest in me. This is an award for Holmes Community College, the Grenada Campus, the Grenada School District, my family and the community of Grenada. Thanks to everyone who has helped me in my educational career. This is a scholarship for everyone to celebrate in. I'm very humbled and blessed that the University of Mississippi chose me as a recipient. "
Lyceum Scholarship recipients must have at least a 3.0 GPA on at least 48 transferable community college credit hours and an exemplary record of leadership and service.
"We award 15 Lyceum Scholarships each year, and this is our most prestigious transfer scholarship," said University of Mississippi Admissions Counselor Anna Lauren Inman.
Vance made a name for himself as a student leader while at Holmes. A Dean's Scholarship recipient who majored in English, he was chosen as the student speaker for the 2017 Associate of Arts Commencement Ceremony. Vance was named Mr. Holmes Community College, inducted into the Hall of Fame, and was active on campus as editor of The Growl student newspaper, president of Student Government Association, president of Phi Theta Kappa Honor Society, a Writing Center tutor, an Ambassador and a member of the Baptist Student Union Leadership Team.
In 2016, he represented Holmes at the 27th Annual Natchez Literary and Cinema Celebration as a William Winter Student Scholar. In addition to his extracurricular involvement at Holmes, he has also played an active role in his community as the public relations adviser and emcee for the Grenada Afterglow Film Festival, vice-chairman of the Grenada County Republican Party and as a volunteer for the Grenada Chamber of Commerce.
The Lyceum Scholarship was created to recognize some of the most outstanding community college transfer students across Mississippi.
