Fine Arts - Speech/Theatre

The drama/speech department consists of four full time faculty and four adjunct faculty which serve all three Holmes Community College campuses. In addition to regular instructional duties, each faculty member acts as advisor to students majoring in general studies as well as fine arts majors. Members of the fine arts department collaborated with other Mississippi two-year colleges to design a state-wide uniform numbering system, course descriptions, and course topics which will articulate with the four year schools.
The Fine Arts Department Theatre Arts Division has been on the move for the last few years. Although HCC has been producing plays through the Holme Towne Players (the HCC drama club) for years, we have broadened our mission in the last few years to take theatre arts throughout our district. We still produce one Mainstage show each semester, but we have added a matinee that high school seniors are invited to attend free of charge.
We offer a range of Drama classes, ranging from acting to technical theatre, rotating them so that each semester the students are exposed to another segment of the world of theatre. This August we will be holding a summer theatre camp and will do work shops that will prepare our core acting group for the fall productions.

We are currently looking at THE CRUCIBLE as a possible touring show this fall. This group will perform at area high schools helping to promote theatre as well as recruiting new students for the program. The Holme Towne Players also sponsored a two plays this past semester. LITTLE WOMEN (photos) was performed to a packed house in March, and DRIVING MISS DAISY was a huge success as a dinner theatre in may. Two years ago we attended the Kennedy Center College Theatre Festival in Starkville, and performed as the opening night entertainment. We are planning to attend this fall where we will see plays from schools around Mississippi. This is also a good place for students and faculty to exchange ideas.

Students interested in theatre should contact Jim Schroeder jschroeder@holmescc.edu for information.  Scholarships are available for those who qualify.
