Work-Based Learning Business / Industry Guide

Employers participating in the Work-Based Learning program are considered to be a valuable part of a student’s educational experience. The information you need to know to get started or to be updated as an employer of WBL students at Holmes Community College will follow in this section. We look forward to working with you, and we hope that your experience with this program will be positive. Students, faculty, and administration at Holmes appreciate you and your commitment to help mold the future workforce.


Student Eligibility for Work-Based Learning

We recommend the following for WBL students:
  • Place a student in a position specifically designed for work-based learning, with an increasing level of responsibility.
  • Require the student to be registered for the WBL program. Benefits to the student include recognition of the work experience on the official transcript, which will improve their credentials
  • Counsel with students regarding their work habits so that obvious problems may be prevented. Please contact the WBL Coordinator if there is a problem with the student worker
  • Complete an Employer Rating


Business / Industry Benefits for Hiring WBL Students

  • Provide reliable source of skilled, educated employees to maintain or enhance their competitiveness in a global market
  • Obtain expanded pool of qualified applicants
  • Gain direct chance to recruit and screen potential employees
  • Evaluate potential employees in work settings prior to permanent hiring
  • Reduce turnover of entry-level employees


Business/Industry Responsibilities to the College

  • Provide curriculum guidance to schools
  • Sign Education/Employment Agreement with students and school officials
  • Provide structured, paid on-the-job training for students
  • Provide on-site instruction through a skilled mentor and/or supervisor
  • Evaluate and report student performance
