The Funeral Services Technology Program is a structured series of course experiences that leads to an Associate of Applied Science (AAS) degree. The goal of the program is to provide training that prepares students for entry-level positions after graduation and licensure. The curriculum is designed to provide students with ethical and professional knowledge in Funeral Service Education, exposure to career options available within the Funeral Service field, and experiences in the application of ethical and professional skills while emphasizing aspects of public health.
The central aim of the program is recognition of the importance of funeral service education personnel as:
- members of a human service profession,
- members of the community in which they serve,
- participants in the relationship between bereaved families and those engaged in the funeral service profession,
- professionals knowledgeable of and compliant with federal, state, provincial/territorial, and local regulatory guidelines (in the geographic area where they practice), as well as
- professionals sensitive to the responsibility for public health, safety, welfare in caring for human remains.
The objectives of the program are the following:
- to enlarge the background and knowledge of students about the funeral service profession,
- to educate students in every phase of funeral service, and to help enable them to develp the proficiency and skills necessary for the profession,
- to educate students concerning the responsibilities of the funeral service profesion to the community at large,
- to emphasize high standards of ethical conduct,
- to provide a curriculum at the post-secondary level of instruction, and
- to encourage student and faculty research in the field of funeral service.
The Natonal Board Examination (NBE) must be taken prior to Graduation. The annual passage rate for the first-time takers on the NBE for the most recent 3-year period for this institution and all ABFSE accredited funeral service education programs is posted on the ABFSE website.
