Lady Bulldog Basketball Coaches

Holmes Community College Lady Bulldog Head Coachhas recently returned to the helm of the Lady Bulldog program last season and made return trips to the state and regional tournaments.

Before coming to Holmes, he served as an assistant coach at the University of Alabama. From 1997-2003, he served as head coach of the Ole Miss Lady Rebels leading them to a pair of postseason appearanced.  In addition to serving at Ole Mis, Aldy's knowledge of the always competitive Southeastern Conference includes five seasons as the associate head coach (1992-1997) at the University of Florida.


Recognized around the country as one of the best teachers of basketball, Aldy has sent several players to the professional ranks including WNBA standouts Merlakia Jones, Delisha Milton and Murriel Page. The Lady Gators went to five successive NCAA Tournaments finishing in the Elite Eight in 1997. The Lady Gators finished with a record of 110-44 and finished ranked as 23rd, 17th, 18th, 16th, and 7th in the five seasons.

The Aldy-led teams of 1991 and 1992 at Holmes Community College were some of the best in team history. The 1992 team, that finished with a 34-1 overall record, too both the state and region championships finishing fifth in the NJCAA National Tournament. The 1991 team took the state championship.

Before coming to Holmes in 1988, he served as a coach at Kirk Academy (1971-1988) and Chamberlain Hunt Military Academy (1969-1971). During his time in private school ranks, he won nine state championships in boys and girls basketball. He also had four overall state championships in girls basketball.

Alty attended Hardy Junior High School and Central High School in Jackson. He received a bachelor of science degree from Ole Miss, where he played basketball for the Rebels.

Hanceville, Alabama, native Dee Merriweather serves as assistant coach under Ron Aldy, who coached her at the University of Alabama, from 2003-2005.

The 6'4" post player terrorized women's basketball during her career at Alabama finishing second on the blocked shot list with 138. Merriweather led Alabama with 8.4 rebounds during her senior season and finished fifth in the SEC in rebounds. She was named Academic All-SEC three times during her playing career.

She led the team in blocks her junior season and finished fourth in the SEC and finished ninth in rebounds. She had eight double-digit rebounding games and had two double-doubles against Kentucky and South Carolina. She played in all 29 games and started all but one. She had five  blocks against South Carolina.

Her sophomore season, she earned starts in 25 games and saw action in all 28. She led her team and ranked seventh in the SEC in rebounds. She had three double-doubles and hauled down 16 rebounds against Arkansas. As a freshman, she played in 27 of 28 games and ranked third on the team in rebounding. She was chosen as the team's Most Improved Player.

A four-year letterman and graduate of Hanceville High School, she was a two-time 3A Player of the Year. She guided Hanceville to the 2001 3A State Championship with 24 points, 30 rebounds and five blocked shots. She was named the state tournament MVP.

The BUlldogs captured three straight county and area championships during her prep career. She averaged 22 points and 16 rebounds a game during her senior season. she was named the Birmingham News Player of the Year in 2001. She played in the Mississippi / Alabama All-Star game. She was also a standout in volleyball and track and field at Hanceville.
